Podiatry/Chiropody

Our Podiatrists/Chiropodists are specifically trained in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of conditions of the lower limb. They are trained to alleviate, prevent and correct these disorders and provide general foot care advice for people of all ages.

A podiatry/ chiropody treatment can include the cutting of toenails, the removal of an in-grown toenail, calluses, corns and treatment for foot ailments such as verrucae (plantar warts), athlete’s foot, foot odour and dry and/or cracked heels.

Conditions commonly treated:

  • Hard skin
  • Bunions
  • Children’s Foot Care
  • Corns & calluses
  • Verrucae treatments
  • Diabetic Foot care/ assessments
  • Ingrown or ingrowing toenails
  • Athlete’s Foot/ Tinea Pedis
  • Sports Injuries
  • Heel Pain
  • Metatarsalgia
  • Arch and foot pain diagnosis (a biomechanical assessment) and treatment (please bring your x-rays or reports if you have any)
  • Adult Flat Feet
  • Podopaediatrics
  • Gait Analysis
  • Insoles/Orthotics (off-the-shelf/ semi custom-made/ casted)
  • Advice on toe problems or cracked heels
  • Advice/ treatment for excessively sweaty feet (hyperhidrosis)
  • Wound Care
  • Biomechanical Assessments

Our Chiropodists are trained in biomechanics, which is the study of posture and walking. We offer Biomechanical Assessments (analysing a person’s walk or run and correcting by prescribing, producing and fitting orthotics/insoles) to advise on flat feet, heel pain, knee pain, bunions, and general problems. We can offer prescribed orthotics and also prefabricated orthotics.

This can be a one-off appointment whereby the assessment takes place, then depending on which orthotics are chosen you can either be given the orthotics that day (if having the prefabricated orthotics) or if having the casted orthotics this can be done in the same appointment and you will need to come back to get them fitted once they have been made.

What to expect from a Biomechanical Assessment:

The Podiatrist will assess the range of motion of joints, assess stance phase, then dynamic phase. Treatment options will be discussed. Please bring shorts to the appointment.

Conditions we can help with orthotics:

  • Heel/Arch Pain – Heel Spur / Plantar Fasciitis: typical symptoms are in the morning after arising, sharp stabbing pain in the heel or after being seated for an extended period of time
  • Bunions: boney deformity of big toe joint can be hereditary or acquired through ill-fitting shoes
  • Ball of the foot – Metatarsals: encompasses pain or discomfort in or around the ball of foot region, from boney issue to soft tissue
  • Shin Pain / Shin Splints: tenderness/ pain in the muscle in the front of the leg on the shin bone
  • Ankle Pain: encompasses the inner or outer ankle
  • Achilles Pain – Achilles Tendonitis: pain, tenderness or restricted movement at the back of the ankle
  • Knee Pain – Patella-Femoral Syndrome: maltracking of the patella at the knee joint limiting activity
  • Lower Back Problems: postural pain linked to the base of support

Nail surgery

We also offer Nail Surgery, which is minor surgery using local anaesthesia for ingrown or ingrowing nails. When there is a persistent problem with a nail that ingrows into the skin, the option of nail surgery is favourable to fix the issue for the long term. (It is suitable also for the patient to have routine treatment every 6-8 weeks for a chronic long-term nail problem if they prefer). If left untreated then the problem can lead to repeated infections, persistent pain and will make walking uncomfortable.

We offer evening and weekend appointments to suit your schedule. All our Podiatrists are able to deliver the latest in chiropody and podiatric treatments. All our Podiatrists are members of the Health and Care Professions Council and the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists, and are continually updating their continuous professional development.

We also offer home visits and Care Home Services.

How we assess and diagnose you

  • Routine Podiatry/Chiropody

A typical first appointment includes a brief history of any existing foot or lower limb problems and to rule out possible contraindications to a podiatry/chiropody treatment (specifically for diabetic/ rheumatoid patients). Then following consent for treatment, the agreed treatment will be given.

  • Biomechanical Assessment

The Podiatrist will assess the range of motion of joints, assess stance phase, then dynamic phase. Treatment options will be discussed. Please bring shorts to the appointment.

  • Nail Surgery Assessment

Prior to a nail surgery commencing the patient will need to bring an open toed sandal/ flip flop as the initial dressing will be substantial. Also the patient will be unable to drive home due to the numbing effects of the local anaesthetic and finally following the procedure the patient will need to sit with their foot up that day and the following day until returning 2 days post-procedure for a dressing change. There will be a final follow-up appointment 1 week later as part of the nail surgery package. Any further follow-up appointments are chargeable.

Mercifully I was recommended by my sister to come here; in short Joseph gave me my life back- he managed the situation quite brilliantly, I cannot thank him enough. Thanks to Joseph I am now back to my daily “fix” of swimming in cold water at Parliament Hill Lido. Magical!
